Game review: White Knuckle
Hello! I'm happy to be making my first review here, and happier to be sharing with you something I enjoy!
I'll be talking about a game called White Knuckle, which even has a free demo you could be trying out right now!
The game can be found on Steam:
This is a game where you climb, and climb, and hope to god that you don't fall. Or if you do, hope that you can climb back fast enough.
I initially came across this game... I don't know when, to be honest. I think it was during one of Steam's demo showcases or something.
I checked the page, saw a couple of screenshots and stuff, and noticed that it had a free demo so I immediatelly went about downloading it and giving it a try.
It was absolutely a blast! I can't think of anything quite like it, and I always love coming across little unique gems like this!
Not only that, but I spent 10 hours playing the demo, without being able to finish a single run. 10 HOURS on a demo! When was the last time you did something like that?
You, little person, find yourself at the megastructre that is Sub-Structure 17. In a vertical shaft with no doors and nowhere else to go except up, with the help of some metal spikes on the wall that you can grip with your hands in order climb(They're actually called 'pitons' by the way. The more you know.).
So you do. You climb up and up, and get past the first... room? shaft? well? You won't be too focused on putting a name to it, as the giant bulkhead closes behind you, and a loud groan shakes the facility.
With nothing else to do, you continue to climb. It doesn't take long to get a good grip(pun intended) on how the system works, and you feel confident in your ability to reach the next level, and the one after that.
Confident doesn't mean fast, and you'll soon hear the sound of something at the bottom, where you were just a minute before. You look down out of curiosity and you see it.
A big, red, amorphous blob of unholy biomass. You swear you saw an arm reaching out, but that thought is quickly pushed aside by the notion that this thing is climbing. Fast.
I won't say more about what you may see, as I hope that was enough to get you interested and I don't want to spoil anything, but I will talk about what you may experience!
You may experience a surge of anxiety as you fumble around the controls trying to hammer a spike on a wall so you could hold it and stretch your arm far enough to grab the next ledge.
You may experience a surge of adrenaline as you mess up and fall down a vertical shaft, barely saving yourself from death by grabbing onto a broken emergency ladder while falling, and then scrambling to climb back up to where you were, twice as fast as before, as the biomass is now inches away.
You may experience feeling like a fucking genius for coming across a room layout you've seen before, and immediatelly identifying a couple of ledges you could grab and jump from,to clear the room faster than anything you had been able to do before.
Or at least, that's how I felt playing it!
I hope you'll give it a try, even 15 minutes would be good enough.
If you do end up playing the demo(or even buing the game!), then I would be even happier if you came back here to let me know how things went for you!
